Jan Juc Skills Maintenance Session Dates 2025

Skills Maintenance ensures that all members involved in patrol duties, Nipper Program water safety, or state/national competitions remain proficient in their skills and display full knowledge and understanding of the patrol award criteria for which they are being assessed.

All patrolling members, including instructors and water safety personnel, are required to complete Skills Maintenance annually by 31 December to ensure their awards remain current and valid for the season.

Log in to the LSV Member Training Portal using your SLS Hub account login details.
Click ‘Skills Maintenance’, enroll in the relevant modules, and complete the e-learning.
Book a Practical Session - walk-ins on the day are not accepted.

His contribution to the club over his lifetime was significant and he will be sadly missed.

The live roster for the 2024/2025 patrol season at the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club is now available! Click here to see the live roster, which will be regularly updated with any changes.

The patrol season kicks off on 23 November, and the club requires all patrol members to attend their scheduled patrols or arrange a suitable substitute.

Nippers Swim Assessments - this Sunday

Hi Nippers. Looking forward to the kick off of the Nippers season for Under 9 to Under 13's on Sunday the 20th Oct.

It is a mandatory requirement for all Nippers to complete a swim assessment prior to undertaking water activities. Even if you completed a swim assessment last year, for the 24/25 season all Nippers need to complete a new assessment.

You can get a swim assessment completed at a supervised swimming pool, at your swim lessons or you can attend a club swim assessment session this Sunday 13th Oct 9-11am at Leisure Link.

Nippers Club Champs moved to Front Beach tomorrow

Club champs seem to attract crazy conditions.

Due to the conditions we will move the club champs to front beach 2-4pm.

Presentations will be at the club rooms at 4:30pm with the bar open. Please bring along a plate of food or some nibbles if you are after something to eat (as we will be at Front Beach and so that everyone can enjoy the champs there will be no BBQ).

Jumpers for States will arrive on Monday. We are planning to hand jumpers out after work sometime next week, details to come.

Nippers Update - the pointy end of the season

Congratulations to our nippers and volunteers who have been very busy over to holidays participating in the Jan Juc Summer Holiday program, Cosy Corner Junior Carnival, Danger 1000 events and Mount Martha Carnival.

We are now back to our regular nipper program with a busy lead up to our final event Junior State Championships (8-10th March).

There will be no Nippers training this Sunday as we have the Pt Leo carnival.

Summer Program Nipper Championships - Sunday 3 March

We missed this last session during the Summer Program due to poor conditions, fortunately, we have been able to schedule the "Champs" at our very last Sunday Training Session for this season. This will be an afternoon session, followed by medal presentations and our season wind-up at the clubhouse. Please watch this space for RSVP and event details.

Junior Victorian Lifesaving Championships - "States"

States are held at Warrnambool on the March long weekend, commencing lunchtime Friday 8 March through to Sunday 10 March. Please watch this space for RSVP and event details. Jan Juc have secured campsites and information on how to book will come out in the next week.

Extra specialist training sessions

In the month leading up to states we run some additional training sessions, more details will be released next week.

Officials and IRB Crew and Drivers

Congratulations to our members who have recently completed Officials and IRB courses, this has provided much-needed additional support to our nipper volunteer base. With the departure of several key volunteers at the end of this season, we need to continue to grow our volunteer base, if you are interested in becoming an Official or IRB Driver/Crew please email nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au or speak to your Team Manager.

Welcome to the Jan Juc Nippers Summer Program! We are really looking forward to joining you for the 9 sessions of the Summer Program where we will create friendships, have fun and build skills together.

An overview of the 9 sessions is in the table below. Also please find below the key information and links you will need for the program.

Communications throughout the program will be via TeamApp (please download this onto your phone and search for Jan Juc SLSC) and on the news page of the website (Club news)

Kick off session - 3pm, 28th Dec (tomorrow)

Our first session will involve a club orientation, beach activities and water skills (water activities will be based on the conditions).

Volunteers needed for the Nipper Summer Program

The Nipper Summer Holiday Program runs from Thursday 28th December until Sunday 14th January, with 9 sessions in this period. Each session is run by our youth members, who have completed Nippers and now compete in Juniors and help with patrol. It’s a wonderful leadership experience and the nippers really enjoy learning from the Age Leaders.

We need your help to support the sessions! Please click on the link below to register your availability.

Nipper Update - Week 12 (Dec 17)

Hi Nippers People,

There will be a special guest in a red suit arriving by IRB tomorrow.

The kiosk will be open pumping out coffees, hot chocolates and snacks.

Tomorrow, and Thursday next week, will be our last Competition Program sessions before the Summer Program kicks in on the 28th of Dec. Details on the Summer Program sessions can be found here: Nippers Program dates

The Summer Program is designed around water and beach skills, surf ed, first aid, patrol skills and team fun. This complements the Competition Program which pulls it all together in training for events/carnivals. Everyone who does the Competition Program will get good value out of coming to the Summer Program (it is included in your membership).

The Competition Program will kick back into gear on Thursday the 18th and Sunday 21st Jan.

Nipper Update - Week 11 (Dec 10)

Hi Nippers People,

Well done to everyone for surviving the Ocean Grove carnival last week. If that was your first carnival - some very experienced carnival people are saying that is the worst conditions they have ever experienced! We came third overall with 75 Jan Juc nippers competing.

We are expecting 1-2ft light onshore conditions tomorrow so plan to be at Jan Juc.

Cosy Corner Carnival entries are due by the 15th of December. Please see your team manager tomorrow if you have any questions about registering.

Nipper Update - Week 9 (Nov 26)

Hi Nippers People,

Hopefully we are looking at ok conditions for a Jan Juc session this Sunday 9-11am (3ft and slight onshore).

You would have seen a Team App invite to an event titled 'Nipper Parents - Technical Officials training'. This will be held for parents and carers at the club rooms 9-10:30am this Sunday while Nippers is running. We are still short on officials to support our entries to carnivals. Caro had to negotiate with Life Saving Victoria to allow us to enter the Ocean Grove carnival as a club next weekend, but we won't be allowed to do this at the next carnival. We need to supply a ratio of officials based on our entries. We are going to have to implement the rule we have flagged from the start of the season that your nipper is not able to attend more than one carnival if you are not able to help with being a coach, team manager, official or water safety. We are running the officials training this Sunday so that you can do it whilst you are at the club anyway. Please come along to the training.

Looks like we will get in and out just before the SE winds kick in tomorrow. See you at Jan Juc 9-11am. Ky Hurst will be at the session providing specialist coaching for the older age groups.

- Thursday night training for U9-U13 has kicked off. Please arrive at Front Beach at 5:15pm so that we can check in and get started.

- It is not too late to become an official. An easy online training session and then a mentoring session at the Ocean Grove Carnival will get you there. Please see your Team Manager tomorrow if you are interested.

Hello Nippers People - Big week of Nippers coming up.

Sunday session: 9 -11am with Under 7's and 8's kicking off. It will be great to have all age groups running now from U7 to U13's.

Thursday session: Thursday sessions kick off on the 9th of November, 5:15 to 6:30pm. Front Beach, Torquay will be the default location, however if conditions are good we will swing to Jan Juc. Updates will be provided by Team App. A good reminder for everyone to join the their Team App age group chat, especially u7 or u8. Your team manager can help them on Sunday if you are not on the chat.

Hi Nippers,

The action ramps up this weekend!

Under 12 and 13's are off to their first carnival in Williamstown. Note for those not attending the carnival there will still be normal Nippers at Jan Juc for U12 and 13s.

Boards are being handed out, for those that have hired boards, at 8am on the Sunday morning.

Under 9-11's will have their first week of water activities. Please remember that your nipper will not be able to go into the water unless they have submitted their swim assessment or S-Badge confirmation form by midday Thursday this week (giving the office time to enter them into the system).

Nippers Update - Week 2 and Training Information

Hi Nippers,

It was great to kick off last week on the beach with a fun session involving Nippers doing a whole range of activities from building the tallest sand castle, to beach soccer, to diving for flags, to mastering baton changes, to long runs.

Bring it on again tomorrow with another beach session starting at 9am. At least it won't be a daylight saving change this week and maybe a little easier to get out of bed.

Also great to see 15 registrations for the U12/U13 Williamstown Beach Carnival on the 15th of October.

For all age groups your team managers would have had a chat to you last week about the importance of adults being able to volunteer as water safety at our weekly sessions and as water safety or as an official at carnivals.

Did you know:

At our weekly Nippers sessions if you are in the water helping and don't have your bronze medallion we need to provide water safety supervision for you too - regardless of how good you are in the surf.
At times the limited number of water safety volunteers we have can limit the ability for age groups to get in the water.
If your Nipper wants to do more than one carnival you need to be able to volunteer as either an official or water safety. This is due to a strict requirement for each club to provide a ratio of their own water safety and officials.

So how can you help:

a. Register to do your Bronze Medallion. It is an amazing experience that builds skills and confidence for you to not only help out at Nippers but also useful for life in general. It is also good fun doing it with other Nippers parents, building a Bronze Medallion bond for life. The course starts on the 8th of Nov and finishes on the 2nd of Dec, involving 2 week nights a week and a half day on Sundays after Nippers.

Jan Juc SLSC 60th Anniversary Celebrations

In 2023, the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club celebrates its 60th year.

Since 1963, the club has remained true to its traditions, patrolling the beach at Jan Juc. The club has built a foundation that respects its heritage, honours its members past and present, and looks forward to a bright future.

To celebrate, a special event is planned to be held at the new club house on Saturday 29th April, 2023.

The celebrations will kick off from 2pm to 4pm with Club House Tours offered for members and guests. Enjoy free BBQ nibbles from Mr Pig (AKA Greg Touzel) while the bar is open for members and guests.

From 4pm to 7pm, join past and present club members for a 60th Anniversary Sunset Soirée. Enjoy light refreshments, drinks at members prices, music and memorabilia at this ticketed event.

Watch the sunset from our spectacular new clubhouse and mingle with valued members old and new.

Tickets to the 60th Anniversary Sunset Soirée are $10 each.

Nippers End of season celebration

Thanks everyone for a great end of season celebration last Sunday night. For those that could not attend or for those that could not hear because of the buzz in the room, below is some of the highlights:

Key stats for the year:

- Number of sausages eaten = 4200

- Number of kms swum and paddled = 3024km

- Number of flags dived on = 5292

- Number of tennis balls saved by under 7 and 8's = 1080

- Number of competitors in each carnival = 80 on average

- Number of volunteers to run each session = 105

Surviving States - Victorian Junior Life Saving Championships 2023

Good luck to all of our Nippers who are competing at the Victorian Junior Life Saving Championship in Warrnambool this weekend. This newsletter will outline some important information to make the weekend a huge success for all:

PROGRAM

The program will now commence on Friday 10 March, please check in at your age group Marquee at 1pm. Marshalling will be 1:30pm, First event 1:45pm. Beach events are scheduled for Friday, followed by water events on Saturday and Sunday.

The full program can be found here. Remember the event list is only a guide – officials can change the order of events at any time, so please don’t assume you can arrive at (or leave) the beach or age group area based on the program as published!

Please remind your children that events run to finals, which will mean multiple races for the same event. A link to the full circular, competition and heat listings (when made available) will be put on TeamApp under the new chat room ‘Warrnambool Junior States 2023 - Important info’.

COMMUNICATION

A chat room will be created in Team App titled, ‘Warrnambool Junior States 2023 - Important info', please ensure you are checking Team App regularly throughout the weekend for important updates.

TEAM SELECTION

The coaches and team managers have thought long and hard about who goes into which team. Many different factors contribute to the decisions made – including a child’s attendance and dedication at training, attitude, as well as performance at carnivals and training throughout the season.

Many of the age groups will be announcing teams on the morning of team events – please support our coaches by letting your children know not to ask about who is in each team – they will find out!

COMPETING AND CONDUCT AT STATES

Competing at States can create a heightened level of anxiety for the kids and as parents, you play an important role in helping to alleviate this. Please stay positive and be supportive, particularly for the younger age groups. Whatever the result, let's remember the kids are doing their best.

So, if one of our Nippers is very upset or anxious about a particular race, please do not pressure them. The coaches and parents need to be supportive and work together to solve any issues which can arise at short notice.

IMPORTANT: If your Nipper decides on the line to not compete please let your coach AND the area official know that your child will not be going into the water. A head count is undertaken going in and coming out of the water – if anyone is ‘missing’, a search process commences. This also delays the running of heats – and we all want things to go quickly!

Nippers will not be forced to compete; they need to want to do it for themselves. Remind the nippers of our club motto – “Have Fun”, “Do Your Best”, “Look after your Team Mates” and “Be a Good Sport“

Be a good sport! Unsportsmanlike behaviour will not be tolerated, and it is certainly not how we want to be seen as a Club. This includes interfering with other competitors during a race, being rude to other competitors or officials (from Juc or other clubs) etc. If this behaviour is witnessed the competitor may be pulled from competition. It can also cause that child/team to be disqualified. Let your child know this is not on.

Parents, under no circumstances, may approach an official to question a decision or result. If you have a concern please let your team manager know and they will deal with the situation appropriately.

Do not let kids play in the sand dunes, if you see any Jan Juc kids in the dunes please ask them to hop out. As a club we can get penalised if our kids are caught in the dunes.

SOME COMMON WAYS TO GET DISQUALIFIED IN A RACE

• Breaking before the start of a race
• Not tagging properly in a relay.
• Not going around all cans in the water or the correct poles on the beach. Make sure your children know which cans they are to go around & not to just follow the leader. It has been seen before that everyone has been DQ’d in the race except for the last competitor who went around all the correct cans!
• Having your hands over the line during a baton change in beach relay
• Lots of technical reasons in board rescue and belt & reel!
• Those not competing, entering the finishing line zone before the race is completed and results announced, this includes the all team members in a team event the first 3 team members need to remain in an allocated area until results are confirmed.
• Getting help from water safety during a race, water safety should not talk to competitors but make sure your child does not reply if they do.

If your child is not clear on any rules for their events, ask them to clarify with their coaches before the race. Their coach will likely do this anyway, but things can get busy!

COMPETITION ESSENTIALS

Don’t forget the following for each day of competition:
• Jan Juc Competition/Nipper cap
• Allocated pink RFID Band
• A club bucket hat to marshal in
• Your Jan Juc t-shirt to marshal in and for beach events (flags and beach sprint) – shoulders need to be covered.
• Something warm to put on between races

All competitors are expected to wear Jan Juc club gear when competing and supporting their team mates throughout the weekend.

LSV Competition Rashies will be distributed by team managers.

FOOD AND STAYING HYDRATED

Your kids need to have access to lots of water & lots of smaller pieces of food. Ideas are obviously fruit but also healthy muffins, muesli slices, small rolls and sandwiches and yogurt squeeze packs. Please be aware of nuts on the beach and sharing between nippers, we do have allergies amongst us.

Kids do not need Gatorade type of drinks or lots of lollies. These are far too sweet for young bodies. They will only give them a very quick hit and do not provide sustained energy for long races; it may even make them feel worse; and just ask the coaches – does NOT help them concentrate.

SLEEP

The single most important thing you can do to help your child be their best this weekend is to ensure that they get enough sleep throughout this whole week. We ask that ALL kids should be back in their own camp sites and not far off going to bed by 8pm on Friday and Saturday nights. The kids need their rest. Even if your child does not have many events on a certain day, other members of our team may and the camp sites are close together, so please ensure that you are abiding by our curfews for all team members to be fair for all.

VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to everyone for your time volunteering, a roster has been created and will be released through signup genius by Wednesday with clear responsibilities for each role. If you are not a Coach, Team Manager, WS, IRB of official please nominate for one of these one of these roles , the link to sign up genius is in the team age group chats:

• Set up of JJ Marquees on Friday morning
• Pack up of JJ Marquees on Sunday afternoon
• LSV set up each day - 6:30AM
• LSV pack up each day - conclusion of events
• Marquee coordinator per age group - each day
• Board handling
• Sunday night BBQ

Water Safety, Officials and IRB Volunteers will receive notification from LSV of your shift details. if you need to change shifts you are responsible for finding a replacement and advising LSV at their Tent. A reminder that all Officials and Water Safety must sign on with Lifesaving Victoria on the day they are volunteering.

Water Safety - there will be a key lock on the tow bar of the trailer for the trailer key. The code is our postcode 3228. It will be the responsibility of water safety to collect from and return all JJ water safety equipment to the trailer each day.

Our Nipper Trailer is looking fantastic with the new branding! Thank you to the Bachelors for taking the trailer to states and the Seymours for bringing it home.

STATES JUMPERS

There are a limited number of 22/23 States Jumpers still available. Competitors who still wish to purchase will need to contact Anita at the JJ office to pay and collect. The office hours are 10 - 3PM Thursday, phone 0475 265 820.

PHOTOGRAPHY

An album dedicated to States, will be set up on the GO Juc Jan Juc Surf Club FB page to share the photos of our weekend. We are looking for keen photographers to take photos of each age group and share these in the album.

PLEASE NOTE - As per all carnivals, those wishing to take photos during the carnival must register at the LSV tent and collect a wristband, a Working With Childrens Check is required to register.

MORE TIPS FOR PARENTS FOR THE WEEKEND

• Only coaches and team managers are allowed in the marshalling areas. Parents will not be allowed in the marshalling areas. If you need to get something for your child, please find the coach/team manager.
• Be prepared for very long days on the beach – we will need to be at the beach early and we all know carnivals can go for a long time.
• Bring layered clothing and several towels for each nipper. The kids will need to stay warm in between events – a big jacket can be useful. Even with the weather being warm kids still get cold between events
• Ensure your kids understand the importance of staying with their Age Group Managers at all times – they need to let their age group manager know where they are at if they move away from their group. They may miss an event otherwise.
• Make sure the kids stay hydrated and well covered up to ensure no one gets sunstroke or sunburnt or hyperthermia depending on the conditions – it is Victoria!
• Remember to never approach an official with a complaint, if you have a concern talk to your age group coach. This can jeopardise the whole club’s competition. This is very important and your cooperation is appreciated.
• Remind the kids that we celebrate all efforts and are proud of everyone who competes for our club. Disqualification is very common at the State Champs if races are not done by the rules – be prepared. We have amazing kids, support them.

FINALLY - THE FUN STUFF

There will be a nail bar and braiding station in the caravan park in our area. Kids (and adults) are welcome to come along and paint their nails blue and get some braids. Please bring your own brush and hair ties.

Presentation and BBQ - This will run Sunday evening near the camp kitchen. A BBQ will be provided for the kids and parents are encouraged to bring nibbles, drinks and chairs. Coaches please be prepared to provide a wrap-up of states and present coaches awards. The time will be confirmed on the day once we know when the last event will run.

For those new to states, we have the traditional pier jump on Monday morning - Details will be in the States Team App Chat.

Hi Nippers People,

This is the last weekly update for the season..........I know you are going to miss them....

Some key info for the next few weeks:

Sunday 5th March

- this Sunday will be a 3-5pm session at Jan Juc, followed by presentations at 5:30pm. There will be food vans, sausages for the Nippers and the bar will be open.

- please make sure you RSVP on team app.

- the cafe will be open on Sunday afternoon so pop up for a coffee, hot chocolate and/or a snack.

- for those that completed the catch up first aid at home, please bring your completed worksheet. Chris has kindly offered to do a quick revision with each of you at the start of the session.

States 10-12th March

- we are looking for someone the tow the trailer down to States. Please let us know if you can on nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au

Hi Nippers People,

Sorry for the late update this week.

Nippers is planned to be at Jan Juc on Sunday but the surf is building so be on the look out for a team app notification if we decide to change to Front Beach.

The Cafe will also be open. Thanks Constance for all the work you have put into getting this up and running. Good coffee, hot chocolates and snacks.

Some reminders:

5th March is our last Sunday session. It will be a 3-5pm session, followed by presentations at the club rooms.
Some Nippers who are attending States still need to complete their booklets and first aid for their surf ed award. See your team manager for a booklet if required and we will email you a pack with first aid information and a questionnaire to run through at home.
States is on the 10th to 12th of March. Remember events start on the Friday.

Hi Nippers Families,

Nice night tonight for the Wednesday training session. Reminder that there is no Nippers this Sunday. We have the Anglesea carnival on Saturday with marshalling starting at 8:30am. The program for the day is here

We are also in prep mode for States on the 10-12 March. A few points on States:

- To compete you need to have completed your Surf Ed Award. For those that have not yet completed the Surf Ed Awards (please check with your Team Manager if you are not sure): 1. There is a First Aid make - up session on Monday 20th Feb 6:30pm at the surf club, 2. You also need to complete a theory booklet which you can collect from your Team Manager and hand in on the First Aid night.

- Coaches will be selecting individual and team entries for events. They put a lot of thought into who goes into which events, with many factors contributing to their decisions - including a Nippers attendance and dedication at training and carnivals, attitude and performance. Teams are pre-selected but confirmed on the day so please ask your Nippers to support your coaches by not asking who is in who's team.

Registrations are opening for the Anglesea (18th Feb) and States (10-12 March) carnivals. Look out for them on Team App.

We only have 2 sites left at the Warrnambool Caravan Park for States - please let Kate Walsh know asap if you want one.

Coaches will be working on determining event representations and teams for States over Feb. As always coaches will use attitude, ability and attendance as a reference when determining who represents us at events. Please support your coaches in their selections.

Wednesday will be as normal.

There will be no Nippers on Sunday 5th Feb as we will be at the Point Leo carnival. There is still time to enter if you are keen (just register and pay via events on team app before this Friday). In particular it would be good to have some more U8, U9 and U10 women contestants so that we can put teams together for the relay events. If you are holding off entering due to the requirement to be able to perform a volunteer role if your Nipper enters more than 1 carnival, remember you can do the online officials course and register your intent to do the practical training with Caro (nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au). This will qualify you to be able to enter your Nipper even though you will not yet be able to perform the officials role.

This Wednesday 5:30pm Under 12 and 13's will have Iron Training at Front Beach. All other age groups have the night off and rest up after a big couple of weeks.

All age groups will be back on this Sunday 9-11am at Jan Juc (unless conditions require us to move - the long range forecast looks onshore but ok swell at this stage)

Carnivals

We have four carnivals remaining for the season:

Torquay / Jan Juc Friendly Carnival - Wed18th Jan 5:30pm at Torquay back beach, followed by meals, music and bar at the Torquay SLSC
Point Leo - 5th Feb
Anglesea - 18th Feb
States - Warnambool 10-12th March

Please be reminded that if your Nipper has entered more than one carnival for the year you need to be able to volunteer as an official or water safety; or be an active coach or team manager in the weekly competition program. We have to meet certain volunteer ratios to be able to enter a carnival and Life Saving Victoria have warned us they will not be accepting registrations going forward if we can not meet this ratio. The easiest way for you to meet this requirement is to complete the officials course. Please email us on nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au if you need help registering for the officials course. We are going to have to be strict on this requirement so please register asap if you need to.

Summer Program Key Dates

Looking forward to kicking off the Summer Program tomorrow with some warm weather. Please find below a reminder of the sessions, dates and locations:

Welcome Dinner

After a fun session at the beach what could be better than a cold drink, delicious food and a catch up with other Nippers families. The Summer Program Welcome Dinner will kick off at the club from 5:30pm onwards on the 27th of December.

Il Matto Italian restaurant will be catering with the following menu:

Vegetarian pasta
Meat lasagne
Fried chicken and chips
Foccacia - meat and vegetarian options
Box of chips

Prices will range from $9-$15

Hi Nipper Families,

There will be a Wednesday night session this week at Jan Juc - 5:30pm arrival for a 5:45pm start and 6:45pm finish.

No Nippers on Sunday and then we kick into the Summer Program with a skills session on the 27th of Dec 3-5pm, followed by a dinner at the club rooms (catered by Il Matto).

The Nipper Summer Holiday Program will run from Tuesday 27th December until Sunday 8th January, with 8 sessions in this period.

Fri 30th Dec: from 3pm. Surf and Environmental Theory @ Jan Juc

Tues 3rd Jan: 9-11 skills session @ Jan Juc
Thurs 5th Jan: 9-11 adventure race @ Jan Juc
Sun 8th Jan: 3-5@ summer program carnival @ Jan Juc, followed by presentations & dinner

The program is run 100% by volunteers, including our future life saving leaders from the Juniors age groups. We are seeking helpers in the following roles:
1) Water Safety (Bronze Medallion or SRC);
2) IRB Driver & Crew;
3) Activity Coach (Board, Swim/Wade, Flags/Sprint);
4) Age Group Helper (aka kid wrangler);
5) Water Safety Supervisor;
6) Program Co-Ordinator (timekeeper);
6) General helper (Pack up/Set up etc).

Nippers Update - Week 10 (Wed 14 Dec and Sunday 18 Dec)

Hi Nippers Families,

This is a bumper update with important info. Please take a moment to read.

Wednesday Nights

We are refining Wednesday nights.

As of this Wednesday, start times will be adjusted to 5:30pm arrival for 5:45pm start and 6:45pm finish over Dec and Jan. As other sports like basketball break for the holidays and the sunlight hours extend, this delayed start will give coaches, team managers and parents more opportunity to get to the beach after work.

Check ins will be by age group and then we will merge into 2 groups. Group 1: Under 9, 10 and some 11s. Group 2: Under 11, 12 and 13's. The coaches will then work within the groups to stretch those kids that are ready and builds skills with those that need.

Every second week, in addition to the water groups, we will also offer beach training for any Nippers that want focus on flags, relays, beach starts and run fitness. This will start next week - 21st Dec.

After the 21st of Dec session, Wednesday sessions will take a break while the summer program runs and will resume on the 11th of Jan 23.

Sunday

What closely for an update. At this stage the forecast is 3 to 4 ft and on shore. We will check conditions first thing in the morning and advise if it is at Jan Juc or Front Beach.

Conditions permitting, Santa will be making an appearance on his magic IRB (boat).

After this Sunday , the Summer Program will kick in on the 27th of Dec and competition program Sunday sessions will start back up again on the 15th of Jan.

Carnivals

With the fun of the Lorne Carnival still fresh in our minds, we have 6 carnivals coming up:

- Cosy 6th Jan
- Torquay Friendly 18th Jan
- Mt Martha 29th Jan
- Point Leo 5th Feb
- Anglesea 18th Feb
- States 10-12 Mar

We are looking for volunteers for two key roles to support us in carnivals:

1. Carnival Entry Coordinator

- Sends out info about each carnival > program, entry timeframes, etc
- Helps team managers where required. Noting that team managers will do the entries for their age group.
- Uses the volunteer info from the Carnival Register to enter the water safety and officials rosters and communicates this roster back to the volunteers
- Coordinators our IRB and Shallow Water Rescue volunteers
- Acts as a point of contact for LSV and Team Managers on the day

2. Carnival Equipment Coordinator

- Looks at the Carnival Register and decides:
- - How many marques we need and where to best set them up
  - How many rescue boards and tubes we need
- Coordinates the packing of the trailer
- Coordinates the towing of the trailer
- Coordinates volunteers to set up / pack up for LSV requirements and Jan Juc gear

Please could you email nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au if you are available for either of these roles. Your support will be very much appreciated.

A reminder for parents, if your Nipper attends more than one carnival you need to volunteer in one of the following roles: team manager, coach, water safety, official, carnival entry coordinator or carnival equipment coordinator.

The officials course can be completed online at your own pace (approx. 2 hours). To access the course:

1. Access your members portal on https://members.sls.com.au/SLSA_Online/modules/login/index.php
2. Select ‘eLearning’ from the top menu and then the ‘Login to eLearning Sports & Nippers’ at the bottom of the page
3. From the Welcome Screen select “Training Library”
4. From the Training Library Screen select “SLS – Officiating”
5. Select “SLS-Core Official" and start the course
6. Inform Carolyn Russel at nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au who will book you in for the mentoring session at the next carnival we go to (this means you buddy up with a trained official at your first carnival)
7. You are then officially an official

Summer Program and Starfish Program

The Summer Program starts on the 27th of Dec. The Summer program has been designed this year to complement the competition program (that we are currently in). This means your Nipper can come to both with limited overlap. The Summer Program is focused on skills, life saving and education. There will also be an adventure race and summer program mini carnival. An overview of the sessions is below:

Session 2: Skills – Wed 28 Dec 3-5pm
Session 3: Theory – Fri 30 Dec (U7-U9 3-4pm, U10-U13 4:30-6pm)

The Starfish Nippers program runs alongside the Summer Program. It is designed for young people aged 6+ with special needs, focusing on beach and water safety and awareness. It features modified Nippers beach and water activities such as games, running, beach flags, wading, swimming and boards as well as activities with the Club’s Age Group Nippers.

Well done to everyone for a great fun carnival last weekend. It was so good to see everyone having a go and Jan Juc finished 3rd overall. Thank you to Caro, team managers, coaches, water safety and officials for all your work in making the carnival a success.

Nippers Update - Week 7

It was great to see us all at Jan Juc on Sunday. We are quite a spectacle when we are all in action on the beach.

Details for this week:

Wednesday 23rd Nov 5:15 to 6:30pm

It will be busy at Front Beach with the beach volleyball but the swell is looking too big for a Jan Juc session (4-7ft). We will push ahead with running the Wednesday night session at Front Beach but be mindful it might be a bit of a walk from where you get a park. We are hoping to do another S-Badge swim.

Sunday 27th Nov 9-11am

Swell looks good (2-3ft), wind is forecast to be offshore and with rain forecast to drop away this week, hopefully even the road wont be flooded! See you all at Jan Juc.

Ocean Grove carnival on the 4th of Dec is under review due to water quality. The location may change. Will advise as soon as we know.

NIPPERS SUMMER SURF EDUCATION AGE GROUP LEADERS

We're looking for fun, responsible and reliable Age Group leaders for the Summer Nippers Surf Education program to be held from 27 Dec - 8 Jan.

You must hold a SRC or BRONZE by the time the program begins (U14 and above). You'll be required to teach surf education including beach awareness & water safety. Wednesday Night Session 5:15-6:30pm

Our second Wednesday night session will be held at Front Beach.

Sunday Session

We will hold the Sunday session at Jan Juc this weekend (unless conditions are assessed as no good on the morning - look out for a team app notification).

Ky Hurst (Olympic Marathon swimmer and 4 times Australia Iron Champion) will be making a guest appearance at nippers giving tips to each of the age groups.

The merch team have done a great job in getting the Nippers Packs ready for this Sunday. If you have a loan rash vest please could you bring it back.

The kiosk will also be open this weekend with coffees, drinks and snacks.

Hi There,

We are selling our fiberglass nipper boards and a few old foam boards. We will use the funds to purchase more new foam boards (demand for foam boards is exceeding supply). Refer to the linked document for images and stock numbers > Boards.pdf. Good condition JM boards are $500, one JM has a ding on the base and is $450. OK condition fiberglass boards are $150. Old boards are $75.

If you want one please email nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au with the board number you are after e.g (1a). Boards will be available next Sunday to pick up.

We will sell the boards on a first in basis, however will give priority to committee members, team managers, coaches and water safety due to the significant volunteer hours they put in.

Under 9-Under 13 Wednesday Sessions

Wednesday sessions kick off this week, 5:15 to 6:30pm, at Front Beach. These sessions are for Under 9-13. We will start with a focus on swim and board with two groups - a group focusing on 'skills and technique' and a group focusing on 'race and fitness'.

Please talk to your Nipper about what group they want to be in prior to Wednesday. They can change between groups at the following session if they want to.

We are looking for someone to pick up and return the trailer. Please let us know if you can help with this by emailing nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au

Sunday Session

We will be at Front Beach on Sunday due to a Seniors Carnival being run at Jan Juc on the same day. It was great to have the full crew there last week, welcoming U7's and U8's. Another week at Front Beach will help them settle in and also give the U9-U13's a chance to nail there swim and board fitness.

We are working hard on getting the Nippers packs together. They are most likely going to be ready for the 20th of Nov. Thanks for your patience.

Hello Nippers Families,

Hope you have had a good week. Please find below key Nippers updates for the week:

Location

Nippers will be at Jan Juc for all age groups tomorrow.

Under 7 and 8's

Tomorrow we welcome Under 7 and Under 8's to our sessions. Look forward to seeing you all at the Jan Juc club rooms for a 9am kick off.

Wednesday Night Sessions

Wednesday sessions are programmed to start next Wednesday 9th November 5:15 to 6:30pm at Front Beach, however we are looking for a coordinator and coaching volunteers to be able to run the sessions.

The focus for Wednesday nights is skills, technique, race and fitness in swim, board and beach activities. There will be no age groups. The idea is that those that are building go in the 'Skill and Technique' group and those that are mastering go in the 'Race and fitness' group. Beach, Swim and Board will run in parallel and the Nippers can decide at the start of each session what area and level they want to focus on. They will then stay with this group for the session, but can change at the start of the next Wednesday night session. Coaches can encourage Nippers to work on certain areas based on what they are seeing at the Sunday sessions. Please let us know if you are able to help out with coordinating or coaching for these sessions at nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au

Nippers Packs

We are waiting for a delivery of the pink rash vests to finalise the Nippers packs. We are hoping to be able to hand them out within the next few weeks. Thanks for your patience. Under 8's can you please bring your vests from last year for tomorrow. Under 7's if you have a vest you can borrow from a sibling that would be great. We will also have some temporary vests available.

Nippers Update - Wk 2

It was great to see everyone back on the beach on Sunday and popping back up to the club for a chat after!

Key updates for week 2:

Sunday location

The location for the Under 9-13 session this Sunday 23rd Oct will be at Cosy Corner 9-11am. This will give Nippers a good opportunity to get out on their boards and build confidence in their swims.

Kiosk

The Kiosk will be opening during Nippers hours starting week 3 (Sunday 30th Oct). Thank you Constance for taking the lead on this for us. We will be looking for 10 volunteers to be on a roster for the Kiosk. Please let us know if you are interested by emailing nippers@janjucsurfclub.com.au.

Officials Course

Look out for a separate post on an Officials course we are planning to run at the same time as the week 3 Nippers session. Being an Official at carnivals is a great way of being close to the action with your age group and helps meet our volunteer requirements for participating in carnivals. We are requiring if your Nipper does 2 or more carnivals you need to be able to volunteer as either an official or water safety. The course is short (completed during the 9-11am time of the week 3 Nippers session), followed by a mentoring session at your first carnival.

Please find below some key updates before the season kicks off on Sunday:

Key Dates:

Just a reminder on the kick off for the season:

Under 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13's kick off next weekend Sunday 16th October 2-4pm at Jan Juc
A social kick off for all Nippers age groups is Sunday 16th October 4-7pm at the surf club with food, music and the bar open.
Under 7 and 8's kick off on Sunday 6th November 9-11am (all age groups will be running from this Sunday onwards)
Wednesday sessions kick off on Wednesday the 9th of November for Under 9s and up.

Nippers Parents Bronze Medallion Training:

We are very excited to be offering a Nippers parents bronze medallion program at our club rooms in November. The bronze program is a very rewarding experience that:

Enables you to be part of the action in the water with your Nipper
Gives you first aid, rescue and water skills that are useful well beyond Nippers sessions
Builds long lasting friendships with those that are on the program with you
Is one of the ways that you can meet the requirement for parent help if you Nipper wants to attend 2 or more carnivals over the season

The program will be very supportive, being Nippers parents participating and delivering the course. You will build up your skills and confidence as a team over the duration of the course and you will surprise yourself in what you will achieve! Some parents that did it last year were apprehensive about the water activities before doing the course and were so pleased with what they achieved after doing it - I still remember their celebrations on the beach!

The course will be run over a four week period in November consisting of 2 weekday evenings and a half day on the weekend for each week of the course.

We had a great session at the pool today completing over 55 swim assessments. For those that haven't yet completed their swim assessment please send it into info@janjucsurfclub.com.au asap before the season begins.

Anita Craven

Anita moved to Torquay a few years ago and has been enjoying making the Surf Coast home. After working in senior leadership roles for 20 plus years, she now balances consulting work, while also working in admin roles with JJSLSC and the Surfcoast Basketball Association. She is looking forward to getting to know all of the members, so please drop into the office and say hello. She is also looking forward to having a sim at the beach in her lunch time during the summer season.

Amy Newton

Amy has over seven years of experience in administration and finance roles. She is looking forward to meeting all our members and making some great connections in Jan Juc. Originally from QLD, Amy lived in the NT as a teenager, then moved to Geelong eight years ago with her husband. Amy has two young children, one of them in nippers, which is where she first came into contact with the club. She enjoys being out in nature exploring with her family.

You will see Any and Anita in the club office every Tuesday and Thursday.

A big thanks to members who nominated for Committee positions at our recent AGM.

For those of you that don't know me - I started in the Jan Juc Surf Club as a nipper in 1984, coming from a swimming club. Competition has been a big part of my involvement over the years, I still compete in Surfboats as a sweep for a few of the Jan Juc boat crews, competing at all levels.

I have also been a patrol captain, training officer and ran Nippers at Jan Juc. I have a very good knowledge of Surf Life Saving especially at Jan Juc. I strongly believe this will help me be a good president for our Club.

I really want to take the club to the next level now we have settled into our new club house. I want to build on this by connecting better with our members and the local community. While honouring our history, I want to make sure the club is in a good position moving forward.

The Nippers program is able to be offered through the awesome efforts of volunteers. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer and enjoy the rewards of:

Being part of a fun team of volunteers
Sharing the Nippers experience with your kid(s) at a deeper level
Building your own skills and qualifications
Being part of the action (you will spend a lot of time on the beach as your kids go through Nippers, so you might as well get out there and have fun at the same time)

That's right club champs are on.

When: Sunday 20/2/22.

Time: 2pm at Juc.

Club champs are for U14 - Masters, and for any club member, you don't have to be a competitor, just come down, have a go and have some fun.

Great timing to because it will run into our Sunday sessions at the bar.

A Great day for Golf !

It was a fantastic day for a round of golf with a full field enjoying the magnificent RACV golf course overlooking our surf club.

The day soon ran into the evening with the winners announced at the Clubhouse Rd Bar.

Also thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help with a number of tasks that made the day run seamlessly.

Bells Bash & Danger 1000 Postponed

To our Competitors, Volunteers, Sponsors and Key Stakeholders,

The Jan Juc SLSC and the events team for the Bells Bash and Danger Swim Series have come to the very difficult decision to postpone the 2022 events scheduled for the 14th and 15th of January.

With the current Covid situation continuing to escalate our responsibility for the safety of our volunteers, competitors and the local community became the primary considerations in us arriving at this decision.

As a Surf Life Saving Club our primary responsibility is to provide patrolling members for our beach and by running the events we believe that this service could be put at risk.

We are currently reviewing alternative dates in March, and will be back in contact over the coming week.

We thank you for your understanding in this very challenging time for all.

Summer Holiday Program - First aid night

The Nippers First Aid Night will be held on Tuesday 4th January at the Jan Juc Clubhouse.

U7-U9 4:00pm-6:00pm

U10-U13 6:00pm-8:00pm

Nippers must be signed in upstairs in the clubhouse at the beginning of the session and out at the end of the session by a parent. Parents do not need to stay, but must walk them in and out of the venue.

BBQ hamburgers will be supplied for dinner for all Nippers. U7-9 will eat at the end of their session and U10-13 at the beginning of their session. Please bring water bottles.

We request that you do NOT drive up Clubhouse Dve to drop/pick up your child for First Aid Night. Please park in the car park on Carnarvon Ave and walk your child up the path.

Also please ensure you have RSVPed via Team App events for catering purposes.

*Please note: The First Aid night is a compulsory component of achieving the age group Surf Education Award. This award is required for U9-13s to compete at State Championships.
