Patrols at Jan Juc SLSC

Patrols are at the heart of everything we do at Jan Juc SLSC - from nippers to competition, it all starts with keeping our beaches safe. Every patrolling member plays an important part in maintaining this service and upholding the high standards of surf lifesaving that our community relies on.

What You Need to Patrol

To be a patrolling member, you must:

  • Be a current financial member of Jan Juc SLSC
  • Have completed your Skills Maintenance (proficiency) for all your awards by 31 December
  • Complete at least 16 patrol hours per season

On Patrol

When you arrive:

  • Arrive 20 minutes early to help with set-up and stay afterwards for pack-up unless otherwise approved by your Patrol Captain
  • Check in with your Patrol Captain or Vice-Captain when you arrive - attendance is logged through LIMSOC
  • If you’re doing a make-up or sub patrol, make sure your captain knows in advance so they can note it in LIMSOC
  • Always let your Patrol Captain know before entering the water and wear your tied-on patrol cap

While on duty, stay alert, approachable, and professional.

Finding a Substitute

If you can’t make your rostered patrol, it’s your responsibility to find a substitute.

  • Your sub must hold the same awards as you so your patrol isn’t left short of essential qualifications.
  • You can find a sub by messaging patrolling members from other teams.
  • Once arranged, notify your Patrol Captain and remind them on the day so LIMSOC can be updated.
  • Please try to organise this well in advance to give your team time to plan.

    Patrol Uniform

Your uniform represents both you and the club, please ensure you have:

    • Patrol shirt and shorts
    • Broad-brim hat or patrol cap
    • Red and yellow quarter cap (must be accessible and worn when in the water)
    • Jan Juc or plain red bathers
    • Wetsuit if needed or for IRB activities
    • PFDs and helmets must be worn in the IRB at all times

And don’t forget the basics - sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water on hot days.

      Get Involved

Patrols are more than just a roster - they’re a chance to connect with your team, meet other members from your club, and provide a service to the community.
We encourage all members to go above the minimum hours, get involved, and enjoy being part of the Jan Juc patrol team.
